Historically Barkuru has its own prominence. It was the prominent trade center and was ruled by various kings like Bhoothala Pandya, Vidyumna Pandya, Chitraveerya Pandya, Devaveera Pandya, Balaveera Pandya, Jayaveera Pandya and the rule was extended till 343 AD. "Aliya Kattu" tradition was started by Bhoothala Pandya of Barkur. Siddha Pandya from Nadavara community also ruled Barkur for about 50 years. Alupa Kings ruled different parts of Tulu Naadu making Barkur as their capital from 567 AD to 1325 AD. Do visit this place as there are many monumental structures which are unique and has a great heritage value.
